Early signals of parasitism expressed through behaviour but modulated by social context

چکیده

Sickness behaviours are believed to be an adaptive response infection. However, the degree which these can expressed may impacted by individual's social environment. Here we tested, first, whether parasitism reduces activity behaviour of lambs, Ovis aries , second, this occurs prior other observed costs and, third, infection status individuals affects expressed. Sixty lambs were separated into replicate groups within three treatments: (1) parasitized: all infected with parasitic nematode Teladorsagia circumcincta ; (2) nonparasitized; dosed water; (3) mixed: some group and water. Activity was monitored before, during after parasite Parasitized had reduced levels following infection, occurred before any impact or measure detected. Infected animals in mixed but level change less than that fully parasitized groups. remained low until treated anthelmintic when been returned same as nonparasitized These findings show parasite-induced behavioural changes occur earlier more commonly signals profile shape responses • Domestic experimentally a gastrointestinal nematode. Sympatric speciation through intraspecific social parasitism.

Sympatric speciation through intraspecific social parasitism has been proposed for the evolution of Hymenopteran workerless parasites. Such inquilines exploit related host taxa to produce their own sexual offspring. The relatedness of inquilines to their hosts has been generalized in Emery's rule, suggesting that social parasites are close or the closest relatives to their host species. If the ...

Selective attention effects on early integration of social signals: Same timing, modulated neural sources

Humans combine co-emitted social signals to predict other's immediate intentions and prepare an adapted response. However, little is known about whether attending to only one of co-emitted social signals impacts on its combination with other signals. Here, using electroencephalography, we address selective attention effects on early combination of social signals. We manipulated three visual cue...

Designing Social Behaviour through Play

“All play means something” Johann Huizinga (Huzinga,J, 1949, page 7) In this paper I discuss the strategic and discursive implementation of interactive play in motivating positive social behavior within children and young adults. Central to my discussion is the social role of play and the roles of the players, as described by play theorists Johannes Huzinga (Salen, K et al, 2004, page 465) and ...

Structural operational semantics through context-dependent behaviour

We present an operational semantics for an imperative language with concurrency and procedures. The approach is novel because we expose the building block operations – variable assignment and condition checking – in the labels on the transitions; these form the context-dependent behaviour of a program. Using this style results in two main advantages over existing formalisms for imperative progr...

Evidence for social parasitism of early insect societies by Cretaceous rove beetles

The evolution of eusociality in ants and termites propelled both insect groups to their modern ecological dominance. Yet, eusociality also fostered the evolution of social parasitism-an adverse symbiosis, in which the superorganismal colonies formed by these insects are infiltrated by a profusion of invertebrate species that target nest resources. Predominant among these are the aleocharine rov...
